Horace Alfred BARDWELL, son of Marcus Kerr BARDWELL (c. 1858-c. 1936) and Elizabeth Emily SYMES (c. 1857-c. 1916), was born on 3 October 1898 in South Lopham, Norfolk. He was baptised on 30 October 1898 in South Lopham. Horace was attested into the military on 7 October 1916 at Croydon, Surrey. - and joined the Surrey Regiment, 26th Training Reserve Battalion, serv. no. 29267. In a supplement to the London Gazette on 23 August 1918 the following notice appeared: Special Reserve of Officers. The undermentioned, from Officer Cadet Units, to be 2nd Lte. 28th Aug. 1918: - ..... Horace Alfred Bardwell. Also in the London Gazette, on 16 April 1920 the following notice appeared: Bardwell, 2nd Lt. H. A. (Lt.) Resigns commn. and retains rank of Lt. [Presumably this terminates his military service.] He married Beryl I BEALES circa 1927. He died on 30 September 1965 in Cambridge - aged 66 years. He had his estate probated on 1 December 1965 in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire - “BARDWELL Horace Alfred of 58 Gilbert Road Cambridge died 30 September 1965 Probate Peterborough 1 December to Beryl Ivy Bardwell widow. £13292.”
